Lawyer Tail Coverage: Why You Need It
Eccleston and Wolf recently authored an article explaining why retiring (and other) lawyers need to appreciate and understand the option to purchase tail coverage a/k/a an extended reporting period endorsement, which provides coverage for claims reported after the expiration of the original policy period, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. As explained in the article, this endorsement is vital as it mitigates the risk of malpractice claims from past actions, especially given the shift from “occurrence-based” to “claims-made” policies. Attorneys considering retirement or career changes should review his or her insurance policy to ascertain the options available, and it is highly recommended that he or she discuss the various policies available with an experienced insurance professional.
